Comment #34: We all pay taxes, we should all be involved in how they are spent. We all need to be aware of what is going on in the political happenings in our country as well as local. Let's get involved!
Comment #33: I think this is a fabulous idea. Many of us have extremly busy kid sport schedules and don't get to go to the different town meetings. In my "me time" I like to check out the news about town.
Comment #32: where else will we find out about city news? can't imagine all news can fit on the signboard coming into town (or that everyone reads as they're cruising past and watching traffic)...
Comment #31: I don’t blame her for not wanting to read any of the articles since they are mostly written by ordinary, uniformed citizens/idiots who have nothing better to do than complain about everything nobody cares about. I however, love to read this paper for the entertainment as I often ponder how someone has the time to write an article complaining about bicyclist running the stop signs on the trail while continuing to complain that the Police are not chasing them down and giving them tickets.
Comment #30: Since this is for the LOCAL people of Orting and since this is indeed the "City of Orting," it seems only logical to keep citizens informed...kind of a "no brainer" to me. Decisions that are made by the city effect us all in the surrounding area. This would help to keep us a part of the goverment rather than just being a subject of...
Comment #29: Orting News is my primary source for information regarding our town. We no longer have the Gazette and I don't receive the TNT nor wish to muddle through their website looking for Orting. I'm retired and rarely see the reader boards posting city meetings, FYIs, etc. (and I'm not about to waste gas just to drive by them). I do periodically check the City's website but it doesn't post "news" nor the 'Police Blotter' and city meeting notes tend to be weeks late before being posted. I can't help but feel that our city government has disassociated itself from our community.
Comment #28: I read the online news everytime it hits my inbox, just as I picked up a Gazette every Wednesday when it was printed. I miss the staff of the printed edition of Orting's paper as it was much more in depth, but do appreciate having this electronic version and I will continue to enjoy it with or without the City of Orting's approval.
Comment #27: Orting news is Orting news! I still miss the weekly newspaper we had; nothing like being able to circle things or laying it the coffee table to pick up and read again. But the news belongs in the Orting news.
Comment #26: Perhaps if we all go stood on a corner and held signs and waived like fools as our neighbors drove by feigning interest Temple would pay attention? Seems like its fairly obvious all the City of Orting would have to do here is begin participating in this thing we call a community...
Comment #25: The purpose of a community paper, whether it be online or hard copy, is to inform the community. That being said, this is one of the few ways I would know any city news. If the city limits information by not providing updates of meeting relevant to our community, then aren't they doing us a disservice?
Comment #24: It makes it easy for me to find and read. I have enjoyed the website and find I can read it anywhere from any computer. I only found out about the bank robbery because of Orting News! Thank you Orting News for doing a great job!
Comment #23: Hey City of Orting, Orting News is free. TNT costs money. This may be hard for you to understand while being a million in debt, accepting Cascadia's dung, and lobbying to sell our water, but could you please not pick sides and simply share your information with this property?
Comment #22: Mayor Temple use to wright an article in the gazzette every month, Why not in the Orting News !!!!
Comment #21: One would think that they would welcome another outlet to reach the people of Orting.
Comment #20: The city of Orting is pitiful and I'm embarrassed to be from here, but who can sell now? Evidently the mayor's office doesn't' care what we think which makes matters worse.
Comment #19: great job Orting News. you have given power to the people of Orting. Well, to those that care enough to communicate versus stick their head in the sand.
Comment #18: I enjoy reading this publication and find it interesting to see what others in the community think and feel about Orting.
Comment #17: Because it's a free, readily available resource, that the majority of Orting residents are reading according to the stats that have been posted.
Comment #16: The Orting News is interesting for those of us who are not in the loop of getting the news. It is interesting to see what other people have to say. Even my 18 year old wants to get rid of the mayor and can't wait until the election comes up. Then maybe we can get a mayor that doesn't have her head stuck in the sand.
Comment #15: I don't think the City of Orting has any "requirement" to read or utilitize this website in any manner. This isn't an official publication and the city has chosen The News Tribune as their paper of record. And, I do agree that alot of the stories I read on here are incorrect, and sometimes biased. While, I say that, I do read it for entertainment, but I don't consider it an "official" news source by any means.
Comment #14: Those organizations that reach out to the media with their information succeed in their mission. It's called communication. It used to be that media outlets had the advertising support to put Clark Kent in every meeting with his own photographer...Orting doesn't have that #12. We do have a great platform in communicating what the people (Read Government too) want communicated. Seems the City has plenty of time to post lost dogs and meeting announcements on a reader board into town, you would hope they'd have the common courtesy to release the same information to this outlet so there was no controversy. But they don't, and there is, and the ostrich with its head in the sand is a far better representation of what our current municipal government is to this community than anything else. In fact, this very string of events on Orting News not only justifies its existence, but places it squarely as a representative media by giving us all a chance to articulate exactly what we expect and deserve. A 'Toast To You' Orting News, thanks for being there for Orting.
Comment #13: it is important that we have a news outlet for our community. As far as communities go we live in one that is vulnerable to a variety of potential disasters. Komo and kiro are good at keeping tabs on the sound but they don't address issues in orting until the disaster has already struck. It is rather unsetteling that our mayor doesn't subscibe or even read the orting news whether she agrees with it or not it is apparent that she is detached from the community that she proclaims she represents. During the past election i read fox news and msnbc, it is good to listen to others opinions that differ from your own it helps prevent short-sightedness. I guess the mayor has fallen to the old adage and ignorance truly is bliss.
Comment #12: I don't know of any city that flows their info to the news media automatically in any form. It is the responsibility of media to have their staff or volunteers attend the public meetings and then report solid, unbiased news. There is a difference between news and opinions or gossip. I would like to see reputable news concerning the city reported at Orting News and the TNT, but from done so by involvement from those medias. The city does have a good website at http://www.cityoforting.org/ that has a schedule of all public meetings which the public rarely shows up for, but are there for the public to express their opinions in a legal and reasonable fashion, on public record. They also broadcast the meetings on Comcast 22 for the benefit of the public. The minutes of the meetings are on the city website. Keep in mind, minutes are not a detail of every comment made, they are simply a summary record of issues, motions and movants. I keep informed about city news, but prefer to attend the meetings or watch them on TV and form my own opinions based on being educated and involved, not rumors, inuendos or twisted information. Nestle is a member of the Orting Chamber of Commerce, but they are not an Orting business at this time. Any business, whether in Orting or outside of the area, is welcome to pay the dues and apply to become a member of the Orting Chamber of Commerce. Dues in turn defrays the bulk of the costs for many events folks enjoy such as the upcoming Dec. 6th holiday festivities and events, street garlands and Bell Tower tree and lighting in the park, and the traditional Festival in the Park.
Comment #11: I think transparency is important to government and for its citizens to know what is happening so that they can be informed as to what their elected representatives are doing for the community. I believe it a shame that the head official of our community doesn't want to be a part of this new media. What is written, is not written in stone, it is meant to have feedback so that we can learn from one another. Unfortunately our mayor and city council doesn't understand that our media is changing, for better or worse, our way of gathering information is changing, more online (internet) content, via sites like this, traditional news sites, blogs, and site such as Facebook and other social media sites. This is how the next generation of Americans are getting their information. The mayor should be reaching out to all and not just hide in the older forms of communication. I hope she responds soon, or someone within the city can better explain for their lack of willingness to participate in this new media. Sincerely, Kevin Hamlet (concerned citizen)
Comment #10: I completely disagree with mayor Cheryl Temple. She should be very concerned about what the public thinks of her. Especially her own town where she is the mayor. If it hurts too much to read and be reminded, then do something about it. This is your town telling you how you can improve, and you just want to ignore what they have to say, like it will just make all your problems disappear. That comes with being in any political position. If it hurts too much maybe mayor is not the right position for you. As my husband always asks his employees "Did you bring your feelings to work today?" You have a job to do and unfortunately it includes listening to the public whether the comments be positive or negative. In the spirit of your letter, Sincerely , Melissa Sabin
Comment #9: Wasn't the City's recent zoning ruling beneficial to your husband Cheryl? Why did you choose not to recuse yourself from the vote on the zoning of his property. The last decent councilperson we had was Veronica Kiebler. She was the only one to have the guts to vote against putting Whitehawk Boulevard through to Calistoga. Whitehawk and the childcare center on Calistoga are doomed. By the way Cheryl, don't you only come to the Soldiers Home to get your face in front of the Governors? You've only been seen there 2 times in your term and neither time was it to visit the residents or meet with the staff of Orting's largest employer.
Comment #8: How else do we know what is going on in the community??? I see that Nestle is listed as on the Chamber of Commerce business lists for the holiday festival. Is Nestle coming to Orting???
Comment #7: I completely value what this web-newspaper has tried/is trying to do. I'm shocked to hear that our own town government has not set foot in the 21st century, as of yet. We need to "get with the times," and not get frustrated because otherwise our town will be left in the dust...
Comment #6: Because ortingnews.com is a really great free resource that they could and should utilize to stay in touch with the people of Orting. Maybe their lack of computer skills or internet navigation savvy keeps them from doing so? If that's the case, maybe we need some people who are more technologically advanced in Orting government! Get with the times, paper is dead!
Comment #5: Why should they? You could close at anytime. You are an internet presence, not tangable. You can change what is on this website anytime. You are a liability. Let the city communicate with their citizens. Do you even live in the city of Orting city limits?
Comment #4: Unfortunately here the comments and feedback is 75% negative and 25% positive. There are a lot of good things going on in the community, but I don't think people who post on here notice that. Kind of like a "my glass is half empty" attitude.
Comment #3: Wow! Hard to believe they don't! I read your article on the Mayor and congratulate you on the attempted outreach. Definately yes. I know they're proud of that reader board coming into town, and those meetings on Tuesday nights at 7 in the evening, but you would think at minimum they'd understand the power of free distribution. Then again, looking at their budget shortfall maybe they don't...
Comment #2: OMG! Is this for real? I know they are all busy, but all they have to do is send you what is happening or post it themselves, right? Maybe she has to go to the library to read Orting News...I just paid my water bill and the clerk had to tear my square receipt from a piece of what appeared to be scratch paper. I know we want to look all 'country' and we had to pressure the Post Office to "Look western or we'll say you're not civic-minded" but c'mon. Put down the banjos and realize there is this thing called the internet and people in Orting like to use it.
