![]() Schools Update from Superintendent CurryBy: Michelle Curry
September 29, 2010
Hello Everyone,
As superintendent, I would like to again thank all of our hard working staff, students and parents for another great start of a new school year. We are now well underway, with many important and exciting academic challenges ahead of us. We are continuing our quest to strengthen teaching, improve learning and eliminate achievement gaps. It is pleasing to observe that our strategic efforts have produced stronger learning communities and professional learning teams throughout the district. Such successes do not just automatically materialize. Rather they are the result of significant dedication and rigor on the part of all school district stakeholders. We are proud of our ongoing accomplishments. Just to name a few, Orting Primary School is emphasizing a collaborative school culture, developing school wide data portfolios which include DIBELS and MAP assessments, and implementing pacing guides for math and reading. Partnership School established Response to Intervention (RTI), differentiated instruction, and obtained a new reading curriculum with leveled readers so all students can read “just right” books. They also created a math club ran by parent volunteers to increase math mastery. Ptarmigan Ridge continued to utilize DIBELS and MAPS assessments, Rocket Math and Tribes. They also promoted school wide collaboration, emphasized student engagement, and upheld high expectations so that all were involved in the educational process. At Orting Middle School, new reading materials were accessed that focused on fluency, decoding and comprehension. Reading time lines were aligned with Washington State standards. New math materials, such as Mountain Math, were acquired, current curriculum was aligned with state standards, and a pacing guide was developed. Orting High School graduated 147 out 153 seniors, a 20 student increase over the prior year. All juniors were provided an opportunity to take the PSAT (at district expense) and a record number of OHS students (53) were inducted into the National Honor Society. Rest assured that our district is working diligently to build trust between and among all schools to foster an environment of strong student achievement while maintaining the support and trust of our community. In closing, please know that we are conscientiously pursuing academic excellence, we possess an unwavering commitment to district wide quality, and we will continue to improve education for all students. Sincerely, Michelle Curry Superintendent |
