Closet SkeletonsBy: Suzanne Stenerson
October 09, 2011
I love Autumn. The changing leaves, brisk mornings and the decor. I have always enjoyed decorating for Halloween, it's one of my favorite holidays. It's also a great time to clean out your closet. Out with the summer clothes and in with the sweaters, scarves and hats. Out with the sandals and in with the boots. It's time to bring out the skeletons and use them for decorating. If you don't have skeletons in your closet then, lucky you. If your skeleton IS your closet then there's no better time than autumn to tackle it.
The task can be overwhelming but the reward of a clean, organized closet will save you time when getting dressed and when putting away laundry. Start out by decluttering. Go through each item and ask yourself a few questions: Do I love it? Do I wear it? Is it comfortable and does it fit well? Does it project the image I want to project? Anything that you do not love or do not wear can be donated to people who really need it. Don't use your valuable closet space to store items you don't want or need. As you fill bags to donate take them directly to the car to keep from going through them again. Out of season clothes should be taken out of the closet and stored under the bed or in a different storage space in your home. Once you've removed the items you want to donate set up your space in a way that works for you. If you like to have it color coordinated then do that. If you prefer short sleeved shirts with the like and long sleeved shirts together then store them that way. Wire, plastic or wood hangers are a personal choice but try having all the same type of hanger throughout your closet. Having matching hangers helps the clothing hang more uniformly. After you've seen what space you have left for storage items shop around for the appropriate tools. If you need storage bins for small items take measurements to the store with you. Adding another closet rod is a great way to increase hanging space. Over the door shoe organizers are great for more than just shoes. Use a mesh one for storing scarves, gloves, hats and mittens. Be creative while shopping and look for items that can be used in a variety of ways. Decluttering your closet is a great way to kick off the new season. Have fun with it and if you need any help be sure to call us for an appointment. We're happy to guide you through the process.
