All depends on where you were trying to hear it...inside or outside? They are meant to be heard outside, not in your house. It's just like a cell phone, the signal gets degraded when you go in a building. If you want to be guaranteed to know when there is a problem, you should consider purchasing a weather radio for inside your home.
