FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 23, 2012 Contact: Kim Boutá, Program Director, 253 597 6234 or kbouta@campfireusaorca.org. CANDY FOR A CAUSE: CAMP FIRE USA KICKS-OFF ANNUAL CANDY SALE It only happens once a year. No, not the Super Bowl. It’s Camp Fire USA Orca Council’s Annual Candy Sale--the only time that you will find their scrumptious Almond Caramel Clusters, Almond Roca®, and the tried-and-true Creamy Smooth Mint Patties for sale in the community. In recent years Camp Fire Candy has been hard to find as the number of sellers has decreased, but there is still a dedicated—and growing—number of local boys and girls out there selling. They are working to support Camp Fire’s programs and to help pay their way to summer camp. The Candy Sale is about much more than just fundraising,” says council Program Director Kim Boutá. “It is about the youth learning to set and achieve goals and how to handle money, and learning effective sales techniques while maintaining safe selling practices. When all these requirements are met, along with meeting the “Fair Share” goal of 90 boxes of candy, the youth will earn the Sales & Sense Emblem and they will receive credit that can be used to pay for summer day or resident camp.” Keep a look out for Camp Fire boys and girls selling candy at select grocery stores after school and on weekends during the three-week Candy Sale which runs from January 27 to February 20. Alternatively, you can call the council’s office at 253 597 6234 or e-mail info@campfireusaorca.org. In addition, Camp Fire will again be working together with the Joint Base Lewis-McChord USO to provide donated candy to soldiers. Buy a box of candy from any local seller and tell them you want to donate it to a soldier. At the close of the Candy Sale, the candy will be delivered to the USO to distribute. Camp Fire kids have been selling Camp Fire candy, made locally for councils all across the country by our very own Brown & Haley, for decades. In the early 1940s local councils sold donuts and daffodils, but those were soon replaced by dinner mints. By the end of the 1940s Camp Fire participants began selling the Mint Patties that are still a favorite today. Currently there are 75 Camp Fire councils in the United States. Orca Council, headquartered in Tacoma, serves Pierce, Thurston, Lewis, Pacific, Grays Harbor and Mason Counties. Camp Fire Girls was the first nonsectarian, multicultural organization for girls in America. Camp Fire USA is inclusive, open to all youth of any race, creed, religion, gender, national origin, economic status, and sexual orientation. For more information about candy, or volunteer and youth opportunities, call the council office or visit www.campfireusaorca.org. # # # |
