Becker encourages young women to enter $3,000 scholarship essay contest
OLYMPIA…Sen. Randi Becker, R-2nd District, is encouraging female high school juniors and seniors to enter the 15th Annual Bill of Rights Essay Scholarship Contest sponsored by the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) and the National Rifle Association (NRA).
This year’s topic is the impact of state-level public policies on women and historically under-represented populations. The contest’s seven winners will each receive a $3,000 college scholarship and an all-expenses-paid trip to the NFWL’s annual conference Nov. 15-19 in Atlanta.
“This is a great opportunity for young women to learn more about the Bill of Rights as well the legislative process,” Becker said. “I would love to see a 2nd District student win one of these scholarships!”
Entries must be received or postmarked no later than July 31, 2012, after which an NFWL selection committee will judge each essay and determine the seven winners. The judges will primarily weigh the factors of research and understanding of the Bill of Rights as well as original insight and personal connection.
Questions by potential applicants may be directed to the NFWL office at 202-293-3040, Ext. 1005 or by e-mail events@womenlegislators.org. For a scholarship application visit the NFWL website at http://womenlegislators.org/news.php?id=7600.
