Research shows that teens who read for fun have better test scores and are more likely to succeed in the workforce. The National Endowment for the Arts gathered statistics from more than 40 studies on the reading habits and skills of children, teenagers and adults for “To Read or Not To Read: A Question of National Consequence,” a new and comprehensive analysis of reading patterns in the United States.

According to the studies, good readers generally have more financially rewarding jobs and are more likely to engage in positive civic and individual activities such as volunteering, attending sports or cultural events and exercising.

Teens may also hone and show off their art skills in Pierce County Library’s third annual Manga Drawing Contest, Oct. 3 – 26. For more information about the contest or to enter it visit any Pierce County Library branch or the Library’s Web site (piercecountylibrary.org, keyword: manga contest). Pierce County Library Foundation will award the winning artists with cash prizes.
