Orting joins the summer construction season this year with two major public works improvements approved by the Orting City Council this month.
Most apparent will be the work about to begin on the corner of Washington Avenue and Calistoga Street, where $420,000 of that federal stimulus money will be spent along with $800,000 from the Puget Sound Regional Council and about $400,000 from Orting taxpayers to fund the project expected to total $1.6 million.
The project will upgrade traffic signals, put in a dedicated right-turn lane and add corridor lighting. The sandstone will will be set back a few feet to allow expansion of the total size of the intersection, said David Roberts, Orting city engineer.
Residents will see the difference in the quality of their water when Well No. 3, serving the north end of the city of Orting, is turned on in time for the peak-use summer months. The well now is Orting's major water source, pumping 650 gallons of water per minute and serving 1,400 households.
“With the installation of this new filter, we wrap up four and a half years of work to improve Orting's water quality and supply,” said David Roberts, city engineer.
The filter cost $380,000, including labor and other costs, and will filter out manganese, along with other metals. The expenditure was a planned cost and did not exceed its budgeted amount in the 2009 city budget.
