CHARGES AGAINST FIRE CHIEF ANNOUNCED

At a special meeting announced a day before, District 18 Fire Commissioners spelled out their charges against Chief Randy Shelton Thursday, June 25.

After meeting in executive session from 4:34-5:04 p.m., the commissioners listed seven formal charges. They include allegations that Shelton violated privacy rights, falsified information, didn’t follow disciplinary process, misappropriated funds, falsified information to the Board, harassed employees and has anger issues.

A request for public document that outlines the charges was made and more details will be reported next week after the document is reviewed.

The commissioners announced that it intends to send the charging document to the attorney. The ultimate outcome could lead to disciplinary action or termination. The attorneys are scheduled to conference July 9.

Also approved was an Interlocal Agreement between Fire District 18 and East Pierce Fire District extending the services of Chief Dave Wakefield, who is acting as District 18 Interim Chief while Shelton remains on administrative leave with pay. Wakefield’s pay is based on 25 percent of his normal salary.

The next regular meeting of Fire District 18 Board of Commissioners is scheduled for Tuesday, July 7 at the Orting Public Safety Building.
