Orting pummels Meridian

They passed. They ran.

And they shut down their top-10 opponent.

In a nonleague game that pitted two of the state’s better Class 1A programs, Orting simply outclassed visiting Meridian, 47-24, at Coplan Field on Friday night.

The No. 6 Cardinals scored early and often, and never looked back during the blowout of the No. 7 Trojans from north of Bellingham. It was 47-0 before Meridian put up 24 fourth-quarter points.

“We hadn’t been tested, they hadn’t been tested,” Orting quarterback Nick Wilkins said. “We just hope this sends a message to other teams that we are legit, that we’re ready this season.”

Offensively, the Cardinals scored on plays long and short. They had scoring passes of 79, 51 and 43 yards and another of 1 yard. They ran it in from 17, 9 and 3 yards.

“They’re a young team, and our kids are very physical and very experienced,” Orting coach Marty Parkhurst said. “That showed tonight.”

Defensively, Orting harassed Meridian (2-1) all night. The Trojans managed only 86 total yards of offense in a dismal first half – and 48 came in the final 37 seconds of the second quarter.
